Why spreadsheets misprice laser cutting

In a spreadsheet, cut time is guessed by eye or by part area. But two parts with the same area can have completely different cut times: one has a simple outline, the other has dozens of holes and cutouts. If you price by area, you lose money on complex parts and lose jobs on simple ones.

  • Cut time calculated by the actual contour length, not by area
  • Each pierce (hole) is counted in time and price
  • Cut speed and machine hour rate by material and thickness
  • Minimum order value, by machine or by service
  • Markup and tiered discounts by quantity

How the quote is calculated

  1. File parsingThe system reads the DXF/SVG, measuring width, height, total cut length, and number of pierces.
  2. Material and thicknessYou pick a material from your database; cut speed, piercing time, and material price come from your settings.
  3. Machine timeTime = cut length ÷ speed + pierces × piercing time. Multiplied by your machine hour rate.
  4. MaterialConsumed area comes from real nesting, with part spacing, and is charged at the sheet price.
  5. Final price and PDFFinishing and extra services are added, then markup, minimum, and discounts are applied, and the quote is generated as a PDF.

What goes into the price

ComponentSourceWhy it matters
Cut timeContour length ÷ material speedIt’s the biggest cost on profiled parts
PiercingNumber of holes × piercing timeParts with many holes take longer than area alone suggests
MaterialNested area × sheet priceCharges what actually comes out of the sheet, including spacing
Machine hour rateYour cost per machine and processFiber laser, CO₂, plasma, and router have different costs
Extra servicesBending, engraving, painting, welding, finishingAll in the same quote—no separate math
Minimum and markupYour shop rulesPrevents small jobs that lose money

Who it’s for

  • Job shops offering laser cutting in sheet metal, acrylic, MDF, and ACM
  • Sign and display shops cutting letters, façades, and POS displays
  • Metal fab shops with fiber laser or plasma
  • Router CNC shops that also quote from DXF

FAQ

Which files does the system read?

DXF and SVG for flat sheet, plus DWG and STEP. The system automatically measures dimensions, total cut length, and number of pierces (holes).

Which machines does it work with?

CO₂ and fiber laser, plasma, CNC router, oxy-fuel, and tube laser. You set up each machine with cut speed, piercing time, and machine hour rate by material and thickness.

Do I need to open the machine software to get cut time?

No. Time is calculated from the DXF itself, using the cut speed and piercing time you set for each material and thickness. You can fine-tune these by comparing with your machine’s actual time.

Can I enforce a minimum charge?

Yes. You define a minimum by order and by machine. When the calculation falls below the minimum, the system automatically tops it up and shows that in the price breakdown.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. It’s a 7-day full-access trial with no card required. Upload your own DXF files, set up your materials, and see the calculated price before you decide.
