Cutting plan for metal sheet and MDF

The cutting plan shows where each part goes on the sheet. With it you know before cutting how many sheets to buy, how much material will remain, and how much material cost to charge in the quote. Works for steel, stainless, aluminum, galvanized, MDF, plywood, and acrylic.

What is sheet utilization

It’s the percentage of the sheet area occupied by the parts. The rest becomes offcuts (if reusable) or scrap. A 70% utilization means 30% of the material you bought didn’t turn into sellable parts — and that cost must be in the price.

How to improve utilization

  • Combine multiple orders of the same material and thickness in one plan
  • Allow parts to rotate
  • Reduce the gap between parts to the minimum your machine supports
  • Use offcuts before opening a new sheet
  • Fill voids with stock filler products

In the system, the plan comes from the DXF

In MakerCutt Factory, nesting uses the true contour of the DXF parts, feeds material cost in the quote, and first searches for an offcut that fits the job.

FAQ

What is a good sheet utilization?

It depends on part shapes. Rectangular parts often exceed 80%; irregular shapes usually fall between 60% and 75%. Combining orders and using offcuts raises that number.

Can I use this for MDF and woodworking?

Yes. Enter the MDF sheet (for example 2750 × 1850 mm) and the parts. For saw cutting, set the gap between parts to your kerf width.

Does the tool nest irregular shapes?

This free version nests rectangles. True-shape nesting from the DXF is available in MakerCutt Factory.
