Sheet utilization and remnants

Sheet utilization: use remnants before opening a new sheet

The system nests order parts inside the true contour of each remnant (not just its bounding box), starts with the smallest, and shows what still needs new sheet. Any gaps left can be filled with products from your own line.

Why remnants turn into scrap

Remnants get parked because no one knows their dimensions, shape, or whether parts will fit. In a rush, you pull a new sheet and add another offcut to the pile. In a few months, that remnant pile is worth more than a full sheet.

  • Remnant recorded with its true contour and existing cutouts, via DXF or a phone photo
  • Automatic search for remnants of the same material and thickness for the work order parts
  • Nesting from the smallest to the largest remnant to consume small leftovers first
  • Report showing how many parts fit in remnants and how many go on new sheet
  • After cutting, the leftover remnant is recalculated and returned to inventory

Your own products in the gaps: the “parts bin”

There are always gaps between customer parts. MakerCutt looks for your own manufactured products saved as DXFs in the same material (keychains, plates, spare parts) and nests them in those gaps. Priority goes to products below minimum stock and those with the highest value per m².

  • Gaps are filled without increasing the material area used for the order
  • Shows how many units of each product come out “for free” from that cut and their value
  • You can also fill gaps with parts from other orders in the same material

Customer-supplied material counts too

When a customer leaves sheets or remnants stored at your shop, they’re linked to their account. In the portal, the customer can simulate the order on their remnants and see what’s utilized and what still needs to be purchased.

From quote to cut

  1. QuoteTrue-shape nesting calculates sheet utilization and material cost.
  2. Material checkBefore you promise a lead time, the system shows what’s in stock (sheets and usable remnants) and what to buy.
  3. Work orderParts are nested into remnants; anything that doesn’t fit goes to new sheet, with the cut file attached.
  4. Updated leftoverOn completion, the leftover becomes a new remnant with the correct contour.

FAQ

Do I need to draw each remnant’s contour?

No. You can import the remnant’s DXF, snap a phone photo, or let the system calculate the leftover from the nesting that was just cut.

Does this replace the machine’s nesting software?

No. The goal is to decide where to cut, how much material to use, and what to charge. The cut program is still generated in the machine software, and you can export the nesting DXF.

What is sheet utilization?

It’s the percentage of the sheet occupied by parts. The higher it is, the less material becomes leftover or scrap and the lower your cost per part.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. It’s a 7-day trial with full access and no card required. Upload your own DXFs, set up your materials, and see calculated pricing before you decide.
